Uncharted: Golden Abyss Preview

Uncharted: Golden Abyss Preview

Not content with the recently released Uncharted 3 for the PS3, Sony and Bend Studios are hard at work on the upcoming Uncharted adventure (which already looks like it’s going to be system-seller) for Sony’s next-generation handheld; the PlayStation Vita.

More info, pics and video after the break.

Sony Bend, the company responsible for PSP classics such as the Syphon Filter series and Resistance: Retribution, is developing Golden Abyss in Naughty Dog’s stead since Naughty Dog had been quite busy finishing Uncharted 3 for a holiday 2012 release.

Bend’s creative director John Gavin has said that Uncharted: Golden Abyss is a brand new, self-contained, stand-alone adventure that takes place before the first game on the PS3. He also stresses that the game is not a port but is instead built from the ground up taking advantage of the Vita’s touch screen, dual stick and other functionalites.

Nolan North is also slated to return to voice the series protagonist Nathan Drake. Sony Bend is also using the same motion capture technology used for all three Uncharted games for the PS3.

From what we’ve seen in the demos, Sony Bend has taken advantage of the Vita’s touch screen functionality and implemented gameplay innovations around it. For example, players can use their fingers to swipe the direction they want Nathan to swing  towards. Players can also pick up items on the ground just by taping the item on the screen.

And since the Vita features dual analog sticks, the shooting mechanic is fast and feels natural. Bend also added some cool touches to moves like sniper rifle zooming, putting a slider that the player can drag up or down, and this zooms the scope in or out in real time.

Graphically, the game looks amazing. For a first generation Vita title, it looks as good, if not better than most PS3 games out right now. Bend has said that they’re utilizing complex shaders, high-res textures, and a high number of polygons per character and environment.

Just one look at the gameplay demo, and players will see the amount of detail and the effects used in the game are unlike anything seen on a handheld console before it. Effects like dynamic lighting, optical effects – which are quite impossible to do on other handhelds – are shown in full force with the Vita.

If there’s a game that definitely will be a system seller for Sony’s Vita, Uncharted: Golden Abyss is it. The game is scheduled to come out the same time as the portable system early next year.
