Who Should Be In Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale?
By now you’ve probably heard about Sony’s upcoming crossover fighter, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. Taking a page from Nintendo’s playbook — sorry, stealing Nintendo’s playbook and xeroxing a page from it — PSASBR looks like a fun, ludicrous mash-up of Sony favorites.
So how is PSASBR going to differentiate itself from the Smash Bros. series? SuperBot Entertainment, a studio formed by Sony in 2009 specifically to work on this game, is in charge of development, and they seems to be staffed with a lot experienced fighter developers. Sony is no doubt hoping that PSASBR will be able to match Smash Bros.‘s surprising depth.
Here’s a rundown of the six confirmed characters:
Kratos: The God of War himself. Kratos is by far the most predictable choice of the bunch. If Sony and SuperBot had left Playstation’s most brutal character off the roster it would have resulted in many a scratched head.
Sly Cooper: Considering neither Jak nor Daxter nor Ratchet nor Clank have been confirmed, Sly’s a bit of a strange choice. Though well-loved, the sneaky raccoon hasn’t been in a game since Playstation 2′s Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, and the skilled studio has moved on from the character.
Col. Radec: Oh yes, one of the most dangerous officers of the villainous Helghast army will be playable. Another strange choice, since there are more prominent characters in the Killzone series. But not a bad one. I can’t wait to play as Hitl–sorry, Radec.
Fat Princess: What would the game be without a little overweight royalty? I have no idea. This is the oddest choice of all. The titular tubby princess doesn’t actually do any fighting in the relatively new series. Methinks some villagers will be showing up to help…
Parappa the Rapper: This pick made me grin. I loved the original Parappa, and the absurd series hasn’t amounted to much since its zenith on the original PlayStation. Here’s hoping Parappa raps people to death.
Sweet Tooth: Everyone’s favorite psychotic clown — aside from Pennywise the Dancing Clown, Vulgar, the Killer Klowns from Outer Space, the clown from Cabin in the Woods, the Joker, Shakes, Kefka, Violator, and John Wayne Gacy — is gonna be right at home here.
I quite like these choices. Kratos and Sweet Tooth are the only really obvious ones. The others are pretty inspired. Sony has a HUGE roster of characters to pick from, and these choices suggest that SuperBot isn’t afraid to dig deep. But who do you want to do battle with? My personal picks follow.
Old Snake: Obvious, yes, but it’s gotta happen. Snake heads Sony’s best known and (probably) most beloved exclusive franchise. (Well, he did. The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and upcoming multi-platform Metal Gear Rising suggest that Kojima and Sony may no longer be the fastest of friends.) There’s just one problem: Snake showed up in Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii in 2008. So why not give us Old Snake from MGS4? Sony may not want to double-dip, but I don’t think it should be an issue: Kratos made an appearance in 2011′s Mortal Kombat, and he’s back for more in PSASBR. At least give us Raiden!
Patches, the Hyena: Come on, SuperBot! Do it! If you’ve read around JTM at all, you know I’m a big fan of Demon’s/Dark Souls. Give the series some love and I’ll be purchasing PSASBR day one for sure. Patches is the only character to show up in both games, and I think that makes him a perfect choice for the battle royale (even if he is a total jerk). But the series has a metric freakin’ tonne of memorable badasses to choose from: Yurt, the Silent Chief; the Maiden in Black; the Dragon God (oh please, please, please let there be a Dragon God level); Mephistopheles; Biorr, of the Twin Fangs; Ingward; the Crestfallen Warrior; Solaire of Astora; Alvina. I could go on but I’ll spare you.
Nathan Drake: This is another obvious pick, but I’d love to see Nate and/or Sully show up in some form. If they’re not gonna be in the game, there has to be an Uncharted themed level. A sinking cruise ship level? Puh-leaseeeeeee.
Joe Danger: He’s no longer exclusive to the PS3, but playing Joe with his bouncy bike would be a blast. Plus they’ve already tapped the downloadable game well by bringing in Fat Princess.
Cole MacGrath: inFamous‘ electric badass needs a spot on the roster and fast. He’s got a set arsenal of attacks, he’s happy to call the PS3 home, and Sucker Punch has already let Sly go to the party. How could Cole not get an invite?
Sackboy: Another one that seems to be almost a given — almost. The lovable hero of LittleBigPlanet isn’t exactly a violent little guy, but given his highly customizable nature, Sackboy seems the most likely candidate to fill the requisite shapeshifter role in PSASBR.
The Unnamed Boy and Trico: I don’t think anyone could reasonably expect these two — the protagonist and his pet griffin from the supposedly upcoming The Last Guardian — to be included, but I’m a dreamer. The Last Guardian has been pushed back an absurd amount, Fumito Ueda, the game’s director, left his post at Sony last year, and The Last Guardian being given a real, solid release date now seems the stuff of high fantasy. And yet we’re told it’s still going to be released — eventually. So let’s include these two as a way of kicking Sony and Team Ico in the ass.
I’ll stop there. I could go on forever. I pretty much kept my picks to PS3 games, and there have a myriad of characters from older consoles to choose from. SuperBot has also mentioned that we’ll be seeing some third-party characters in the game. So who cares if they’re ripping off Nintendo? Sony has a lot of awesome characters, and I kind of want to see them kill each other.
But enough of my opinion. Who do YOU want to see throw down in Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale?
