PAX 2012: Best PlayStation Vita Game

Earlier this summer, Gamescom brought about huge news of upcoming PlayStation Vita games; however it was at PAX Prime is where gamers really got their hands on some of the most highly-anticipated games for the handheld. Players could try the platform-heavy Guacamelee, the 8-bit open-world mayhem of Retro City Rampage, the online cooperative gameplay of Ragnarok Odyssey, and of course, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation.

In this article, I’ll discuss what I think were the best PlayStation Vita games at PAX. I’ll also talk about my pick as the Vita game of show. But before I begin, here are some honourable mentions:

  • Retro City Rampage
  • Jet Set Radio
  • Persona 4 Golden
  • Ragnarok Odyssey

Guacamelee

This Mexican Luchadore-themed multiplayer platformer from drinkbox Studios caught my eye at the Indie Megabooth on the first day of PAX. It’s a metroidvania-type platformer that has players collecting and upgrading their skills to not only traverse the diverse the game world, but defeat their enemies in Mexican-style lucha-libre combat in 2D. It’s also exudes a unique art style that stays true to it’s lucha libre inspiration; namely its colourful and over-the-top. It’s also one of the next batch of Vita games that support cross-play with the PlayStation 3.

During my hands-on with Guacamelee, I was able to test cross-play with a person playing on the PS3. Minus the occasional interference from other bluetooth devices, there was no noticable lag with the gameplay. Cross-play also transformes the PlayStation Vita into an interactive map that shows where the players are in the game world. Definitely a PS Vita game that I’m looking forward to playing later this year.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation

Not only are we excited for Assassin’s Creed III for PS3, we’re equally excited for it’s spin-off titled Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation for PS Vita. Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation casts players as an all-new heroine named Aveline; the very first playable female assassin in Assassin’s Creed franchise (outside of multiplayer anyway).  Aveline’s adventure takes place in Louisiana around the same time as Connor in Assassin’s Creed III so there will be a number of tie-in stories, characters, and perhaps even weapons and items that connect the two games and plots together.

The game features smooth animations and graphics that previously could not have been done on older handhelds. Other than Uncharted: Golden Abyss, I haven’t seen a Vita game that looks as good as Liberation. The fact that the game also features a seamless open-world means that this isn’t just a paltry spin-off but a full-fledged title that’s worthy of the Assassin’s Creed name.

EDITOR’S CHOICE: Best PlayStation Vita Game At PAX Prime 2012

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation

As fun and exciting it is play through Guacamelee’s mix of lucha libre with platforming, metroidvania gameplay, I’m chomping at the bits to get my hands on Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation on the Vita. It’s built from the ground up for the system and makes use of the handheld’s features for a more immersive experience. It’s games like these that make owning a PlayStation Vita totally worth it.
