Best of 2012 – Nick’s Top Five Games Of The Year

The Walking Dead is only one of Nick’s picks this year. What other games could there be on his list?
Lately we’ve been giving out our awards to what we think are the best Canadian-developed games of the year. Of course, in addition to those awards, each of our amazing writers will also be sharing their top five games of 2012. Let’s start out with our newest writer/ex-Ironstar Movement member Nick Drouillard and his picks for games of the year.

UFC undisputed 3
There’s no better feeling than the ones I get after dominating a player online using nothing but ground game. It’s also just as frustrating for the opponent evidenced by the hundreds of hate messages I receive after each glorious victory on my road to becoming champion of my weight division. Not to mention there’s the addition of classic PRIDE rules, fighters, announcers; a beefed-up career mode, and a stacked roster that keeps me coming back for more. And that’s only part of the reason why I chose UFC Undisputed 3 for my #5 pick of 2012.
Mass Effect 3
It was a long, hard road to get there. We lost a lot of good men, women, and alien beings along the way; and in my eyes it was all worth it. The sheer amount of drama, the sense of dread, the connections I made with every single crewmen that ever served on the SSV Normandy; I have never “felt” like that for characters any game that i can think of. To see it all come to a close was a hard pill to swallow, but I did it with a smile on my face every step of the way. Mass Effect 3 Takes #4 with honours on my top 5 of 2012.
The Walking Dead: The Game
I didn’t think any game could make me as emotionally invested in the characters and story as The Mass Effect franchise did for some time. Oh how wrong was I? Once Telltale Game’s The Walking Dead grabs you, it never lets go until the bitter, grim end. I’ve been to family funerals that didn’t tug at the heart strings as hard as this seemingly innocent game did with its comic book visuals and simple gameplay. The Walking Dead takes the #3 spot with ease in my top five games of 2012.
Natural Selection 2
I’ve played a lot of online shooters in my day, But never have I had an experience quite like Natural Selection 2. Other games promote the idea of teamwork, none of them compare to the feeling you get when you play Natural Selection 2 online. Complete strangers using mics, communicating, and coming together to form a cohesive unit in order to crush the opposition. It’s magical stuff that’s rarely seen in games, and for that reason alone it takes the #2 spot on my list.
Far Cry 3
Imagine this if you will, you sneak up behind a guard, put a machete through his back and out his chest as you grab the knife from his own sheathe and throw it against the sniper up in his perch. Then, you blow a hole in two other guards with a shotgun as the rest of the camp is finally alerted to your presence; they then follow you down a road where you conveniently placed land mines. And that ladies and gentlemen is why Far Cry 3 is my pick for the best game of 2012.

Great list, friend. Natural Selection 2 is an interesting pick. I gotta try it one of these days.
