As you might have read in one of our earlier posts, April 20th was the night of the fourth annual Canadian Videogame Awards. And like many award shows, there’s a customary red carpet gala for the presenters, nominees, and special guests. Fellow JTM editor Lee Guille and I were there to cover not only the event itself but the red carpet as well.

The event saw the CVA’s host and Deus Ex: Human Revolution voice actor Elias Toufexis, Mass Effect 3′s Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer, Far Cry 3′s Michael Mando (voice of the crazy Vaas), Electric Playground’s Victor Lucas, and many more. One thing was for sure, the Canada’s game community, developers, publishers and fans all came to support the Canadian video game industry’s night of celebration.

Check out the CVA 2013 red carpet gallery after the break.

And The 2013 Canadian Videogame Award Winners Are…

canadian videogame awards trophies

Well, we just came back to the hotel after a crazy night at the fourth annual Canadian Videogame Awards and oh boy was it ever a blast. Not only did it put a spotlight on amazing Canadian-developed games, it also showcased the talented studios and people behind them.

Let me tell you, the competition this year was the fiercest it’s ever been. Indie breakout hits like Mark of the Ninja, Papo & Yo, and Sound Shapes faced off with Triple-A heavy hitters like Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed 3, and Sleeping Dogs in awards categories that blurred the line between Indie and big budget productions.

Our own pick for 2012′s Best Overall Shooter – Far Cry 3 took home six awards including the coveted Game of the Year, Mass Effect 3 won Best Console Game and two others, while Mark of the Ninja stood out of the indie scene with their two award wins including Best Indie Game.

Game of Thrones – The Exhibition

Game of Thrones: The Exhibition

Have you ever watched a fantasy show and thought, “I wish I could visit that world”? Well, Game of Thrones fans, now you can visit Westeros. HBO has put together a free exhibition, which is on tour now. The first stop on the Game of Thrones – The Exhibition tour was Toronto, where I had the chance to take part in the fun.

The line-up was a little long, but I can’t really complain when the price of admission is free. Once past the velvet rope, I entered the world of Westeros; and what a world it is! Game of Thrones – The Exhibition features more than 70 artifacts from the show including costumes, props, house banners, weapons and maps from the first two seasons of the series. Eagle-eyed fans will also get a chance to see a few props from the upcoming season starting at the end of March.

The Social Power of Videogames – Our Experience At Games Without Frontiers

ideafest2013

On March 9, 2013,  JTM Games was proud to be a part of UVIC’s Ideafest 2013 – Games Without Frontiers, a rare event where professors, grad students, undergraduates, high-school students, local game designers/studios and curious citizens of Victoria gathered to  explore, discuss, and marvel at the power of video-game technology in bringing people together to improve the world. To be more specific, Games Without Frontiers infromed citizens of the positive effects the industry has to bring to health research, education, and social change.

A great number of Victoria, BC-based game studios and tech companies like Dactyl Applications, KANO/APPS, InLight Entertainment showed up to Games Without Frontiers to demonstrate their newest and latest creations. And even Oregon-based 2 Player Productions screened their popular documentary “Minecraft: The Story of Mojang” to the UVIC community.

JTM Games (Lee Guille and myself) were at Games Without Frontiers to host the Mini-Indie Game festival to inform non-gamers of the most innovative, experimental games of the last few years. In addition, we hosted two Q&A sessions; one with Papo & Yo Creator Vander Caballero and the other with the up-and-coming Matt Cohen, the developer of the indie hit Paranormal. (We’ll be posting both interviews on the site soon!)

Check out a detailed recap of our experience (including trials and learning experiences) during Games Without Frontiers after the break. Read the rest of this entry

Come Join Our Chat With Papo & Yo Creator On March 9

papo-yo

If you happen to live in Victoria, British Columbia or are planning to attend the Games Without Frontiers event on March 9th, come join our chat with Papo & Yo creator Vander Caballero (joining us through Skype) where we’ll discuss the story, game’s design, development history, metaphors, and fan/critical reception.

Join our chat with Vander as part of our indie game screenings of independent games that show the power of video game technology to bring people together and improve the world. As many of you know, I’ve been a vocal supporter of Papo & Yo since it’s release last year; it was a game that tackled social issues in an interactive manner and had left an impression on me personally.

Our chat with Vander will be held live at the David Strong Building (Room C116)  University of Victoria on March 9, 2013 at noon.

GottaCon 2013: Day 1 – WarHammer 40K And Tabletop RPG’s

warhammer-40k-marines

This year we wanted to go all out and cover every cool videogame, boardgame, LARPing session, and tabletop game available at GottaCon 2013. If you’re not familiar with GottaCon, the GottaCon Gaming Convention is an up-and-coming convention held once a year in my hometown of Victoria British Columbia, Canada. For Day 1, I wanted to focus on Tabletop games, specifically WarHammer 40K.

To be honest, GottaCon – Day 1 was my first time playing tabletop RPG’s. As primarily a console/PC gamer, the one Tabletop RPG that drew my attention was WarHammer 40K, most likely because I was familiar with the brand from my experience playing THQ’s WarHammer 40K: Space Marine, Dawn of War, Dawn of War II, and Kill Team. Find out more about WarHammer 40K and our first day at GottaCon after the break. Read the rest of this entry
